
Today, Engadget posted an article to compare the “right-out-of-box” features between Leopard and Vista. Leopard’s overall scores higher than Vista (Leopard - 45 points, Vista - 40 points).
They break it down into 9 different categories. Here is the summary:
1) User interface
- Overall, Leopard provides better user interface because of its features like Cover flow, Quick look, Expose, and Spaces.
2) Software
- Leopard also provides better “out-of-the-box” software than Vista. It has user friendly automatic backup program - Time Machine; Safari 3 which provides RSS reader and Web clips (but personally, I prefer to use Firefox); Apple’s TextEdit provides more function than Microsoft wordpad; iChat - supports more visual effects, powerful file sharing and support more protocol than Window Live Messenger.
3) Media
- Leopard and Vista are tie in this category. Leopard provides better photo or video editing programs like iPhoto and iMovie, but Vista provides better media programs like Media Center.
4) System tools
- Leopard is better. It has automation tools - Automator and Apple Script, data detection for Address or Phone number, etc.
5) Networking and connectivity
- Vista is better. Vista have better wifi support in general.
6) Security
- Leopard is better. First of all, Less virus infect on Mac. It also provides stronger encryption features and better parent controls program.
7) Gaming
- Vista is better. It has stronger gaming graphic engine - Direct X 10 and gaming network - Xbox live anywhere.
8 ) Performance and Hardware
- It is tie. Leopard provide better support on 64-bit processing (by default, leopard use 64-bit, but on Vista, you have to buy 64-bit version and required different drivers for 64-bit version); On the other hand, Vista provides better network and optimization perfermance.
9) Business
- Vista is better. The new feature of Active Domain allows your system account/ home directory to be stored on an encrypted USB drive.
This shows Leopard is better on user interface, graphic software, security, and performance. On the other hand, Vista is better gaming and business-oriented OS.
